Q: What containers are best to store ingredients like flour and sugar in quantities?

A: To transfer ingredients into other containers, use only food grade materials designed for food use. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic containers are safe. Make sure your container has a tight fitting lid to prevent contamination and to keep ingredients fresh.

To safely transfer and store ingredients:

  • Wash, rinse, sanitize and air dry containers before refilling.
  • Keep the original package label or Take a picture of the package with the establishment number and product codes. If product is recalled, use the photo to identify if you have the recalled product.
  • Throw out any recalled product. Then any surfaces, shelves, or containers with soapy water, rinse with clean water, sanitize and air dry. Dilute 1 TBSP unscented, liquid chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of water
